The world is a big, vast and wonderful place. It is separated into different countries, and we separate it further. We call some countries developed and others third world. Or westernised and developing? What this means is that some countries in the world have populations living in poverty. They have governments in debt. Others have a working, middle and upper class. They have advanced societies. They have the internet that you are currently using. You would expect then that a service like Health Care would be the same across these Developed Countries. But actually, in many cases they are completely different, no matter where they are on the globe. For instance, Canada is right next to America. Both are developed countries. Both have good economies. However, one arguably has a better healthcare system than the other.
You might be wondering, why this matters. You probably only care about the country’s healthcare you live in right? Well, life is forever changing. You never know when you are going to move abroad. It would be useful to understand what kind of support your family will have. Also, if you are living in a country with a poor healthcare system, you may want to think about getting more involved in politics. Changing things for the better.
Well, the UK have the NHS. If you live in this land of tea and scones you probably hate the NHS. The waiting times are long. The services are awful. The nurses cannot speak English properly, and you may have to travel hours to a different hospital. If you live in the UK, all these issues are common complaints. Not to mention the lack of beds. In fact, there is a strong public opinion that the NHS is at breaking point. It is in constant debt, and there is a worry that it will not be able to cope with the growing population. It increased by nearly half a million last year according to official statistics. But hold on because at its core the NHS still has a very attractive policy. Health Care Free and Available For All. For the most part, this is true. The NHS is free for anyone who is a UK resident. Only specialized treatments like the opticians and dentists are exempt.
If you have the money, you can also go private. An option many people in the middle class are now choosing. Although, they would be surprised to find the average waiting times between private and the NHS are roughly the same.
Apparently the French lead the world in health care. America looks on from a distance wondering how on earth they do it. France has a population of over sixty-five million and a gross domestic product over two and a half trillion. Frances system is effective. Peculiarly, in relation to America and the GDP France spends significantly less on health care. Yes, public expenditure on treatment is close to eighty. How does that one work?
Well, most of the cost of healthcare is paid for by the government. They do this from a variety of public sources like taxation and insurance. Only a few select treatments are paid for by the population themselves into private insurance. The system works, and the public service is open to all who live in France including illegal immigrants. The same cannot be said for the UK or the next country on our list.
Spain is another country that rivals the best in providing health care. How does it work? If you live and work in Spain, you will be able to use the free state healthcare system. You pay for it by having a sum of money taken from your wages. Similar to the UK, the Spanish get most things for free on this system apart from certain prescriptions. Spain is also ranked at 6th in the world for the number of doctors per population. Spain only spends about ten percent of their GDP on healthcare. But their women have a better life expectancy than any other population in the world. We are not sure why this is, but we imagine it must have something to do with their quality of hospitals.
If you want faster treatment in Spain, then you will have to go private. But thankfully, there are a wide a number of companies offering private insurance. There are even companies like Caser Insurance that offer affordable coverage specifically to Expats. This is anyone living in a country where they were not born. If you are moving to Spain and want to the best health care, this may be the ideal option for you.
The American healthcare system is ranked dead last in the developing world. Why? First for healthy lives America is falling behind. This means that rates of infant mortality, life expectancy and death rates. Overall death rates are 25-50 percent higher than other better rated developing countries. A recent poll also found that people on average incomes were far less likely to visit a doctor when they felt sick or unwell.
However, there is good news. If you are rich America is a fantastic place for healthcare. You will receive the best treatment from some of the top physicians in the world. Many people believe the American Health Care has the best treatment for cancer. If you can afford the insurance to pay for it, that is.
Is there anything the Australians do not have? They do have a fairly strict immigrant policy. So your biggest problem with gaining healthcare in this country will probably be getting in, in the first place. But with beautiful beaches, Australia also has a government health care that is accessible to all. What distinguishes it from the rest? The encourage the rich to go private by taxing them more. This frees up the government healthcare for those who need it. It pays off two because death rates related to medical care were twenty-five percent lower than the Uk in 2003.
